"We will not take away a smartphone from children": the development of computer games in Russia was evaluated at the SPIEF

June 16, 2023

At the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2023), experts discussed the prospects for the development of digital technologies and cyber-physical formats of games, as well as Russian esports. The task of these directions is to show children and parents new and safe opportunities of the digital world.

Dmitry Peskov, Special Representative of the President of Russia for digital Development, director of the Young Professionals direction of ASI, noted that many modern children grow up with a sense of a clear separation of the "boring" physical world, where there is a school and parents, and a virtual one, which you can go to just by picking up the phone, "and there will be a completely different life". Neither parents nor the state as a whole understand what is really happening in the digital world, and this often leads to conflicts.

The new big challenge is to unite the physical and digital space, the expert added, and to give "a civilizational response to the cultivation of digital addiction in people."

"Games are digital drugs offered by the largest Western corporations today. The more a person plays, the more he donates, the greater the income of the corporation. And their task is to make sure that you donate incessantly, because otherwise you are not cool," Dmitry Peskov said.

"We will not take away a smartphone from children. But the idea arose to use the game that they are so passionate about, so that they work with information for their own development. That is, to create a new game that would interest children and would work for creation. I came to the Agency for Strategic Initiatives with this idea," said Gennady Bukaev, General Director of Rosneftegaz JSC.

Dmitry Peskov noted that in addition to combining physical and virtual space (there is already such an experience, for example, the "Pokemon fishing" popular at the time), it was important to fill the game with socially approved meanings for all its main customers.

"Children should feel good in this space, parents should understand that there is nothing terrible in the virtual world, and the state should see the benefits, that is, the space for obtaining skills that would be maximally applicable in further career building," the expert said.

To do this, in 2023, a team of Russian developers launched the world's first National Cyberphysical platform "Den" – a project for the mass involvement of children in technological education through mobile games.

The platform is cyber-physical, as it includes not only the mobile game itself with programming tasks, but also regional networks of circles and engineering competitions, participation in which will help users reach a new level. For example, during the game, the user will be offered to construct a copter in the nearest technological circle. Then this copter will appear in the virtual space.

Bashkiria became the pilot region for the implementation of the project. "We have made a self-replicating platform where talented guys themselves invent history and bring something new to it. It is important for us through this platform to break the stereotype that Bashkortostan is only oil. There are a lot of talented guys and breakthrough technologies in our republic. We have created a product that we will replicate, critically comprehend and involve children in it," said the head of the republic Radiy Khabirov.

He also noted that foreign games formed a certain militant emotional world of Russian children, while in the "Den" the characters are kind. "Our heroes are not evil, but talented and sympathetic bears," the head of Bashkortostan added.

The student will be able not only to transfer his achievements in the real world to the game world, but also to convert them into additional points for the Unified State Exam. All the student's successes are celebrated on the platform of the NTI "Talent" Circle Movement, integrated with the "Den".

According to Dmitry Smith, the president of the Russian Computer Sports Federation, such a digital portfolio can be a plus for further employment.

"Olympiads, programming competitions are involvement in the profession through competitive motivation. And we formulate a task for the federation to create such a career elevator. When it is written in your resume that you are a master of sports in programming, the employer immediately understands that you are already worth something as a professional," Dmitry Smith believes."

The project of the National Cyberphysical Platform "Den" [Berloga], the leader of which is Alexey Fedoseev, is dedicated to the mass involvement of young people in scientific and technical creativity and education through a mobile game. The project is based on a gaming platform created by Russian developers. The pilot project "Den" was launched with the support of ASI and is currently being implemented in Bashkiria. Earlier, the idea was presented at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

Entering the "Den", a student can program directly during the game, as well as develop his character by participating in real educational events. The platform integrates with the events of the NTI Circle Movement and technical creativity sites, which makes it an entry point for young people into technological circles, helps them learn programming and other in-demand technical skills through the game.

The project leader proposes to form measures to support domestic developers of educational technology platforms and socially useful computer games in entering foreign markets, including to promote the country's culture and strengthen international cooperation.

Dmitry Peskov stressed that the "Den" is "an attempt for the first time in the world to combine the physical and virtual world in the individual logic of a child's development."
